One of the most important decisions you will make as a parent is deciding what primary school to enroll your child in. Make the right decision and you could very well be placing them on the path to lifelong learning, building deep long-term relationships with friends and mentors, and overall success. In the last decade or so, there has been a surge in international schools in India. Here are some useful tips to help you find the right one:

1. It’s not all in the name:  but the name might matter: In this regard, it’s important to strike the right balance. Do your homework. Consider lists available online that will tell you which schools are ranked the best CBSE schools in Pune or the best primary schools in Pune. At the same time, ranking does not guarantee quality, and more importantly, it does not guarantee your child’s happiness.

2. Will my child be happy here?: Your child’s happiness will be of course be your biggest priority. The first question you should ask yourself on setting foot in the school is “do I feel happy here? Do I get a good feeling from this school?” Additionally, the importance of academics is indisputable, but don’t forget to consider the school’s sports or extracurricular programs. Select a school whose extra curriculars match up with your child’s hobbies or interests. You can be certain that a school that offers your child opportunities other than academics will work to provide them with an environment they can thrive in.

3. Relationship between teacher and student is key: This will undoubtedly be another big consideration for you. A good teacher will do much more than just impact knowledge. They will guide your child and help them grow. If possible, don’t forget to speak with the teachers who will mentor your child. Observe a class to gain an understanding of how the teachers interact with the students. This will be invaluable to you.

4. The children: Ultimately, one of the biggest things to consider is whether your child will fit into the school. Regardless of how prestigious the school is, or how well-equipped and knowledgeable the teachers and staff are, if your child will be unhappy in their new learning environment, you’d be well-advised to shy away from that particular establishment. Before enrolling your child, consider speaking with other students and their parents at the school. More than any teacher, they will be able to give you true testimonials about the school.

Selecting one of your child’s first schooling experiences is nerve-wracking for any parent. Do you homework, do some research – and you will find that the process becomes a little easier.
