It is believed that learning by doing has numerous advantages including a greater depth of understanding of concepts, broader knowledge base, improved communication and interpersonal/social skills, enhanced leadership skills, increased creativity, and improved writing skills keeping the same in mind an Integrated Project making activity for grade 3-10 was conducted at GIIS Chinchwad on 18 June 2015.

The theme for the project varied from Spider’s, Bee’s and Butterflies to Food and Resources and also the colonization of Mars . It was a fun filled exciting endeavour for all the students as it enhanced their research skills, analytical skills & sorting skills finally leading to aesthetically compiling the data on the given theme.Each class was divided into 6-8 groups. Every group was instructed to submit a detailed report of the project in the form of a newsletter, mobiles, collage and posters. Hands on models created in class made the entire process of research and implementation real for children.

Integrated Project based learning was not made limited to one or two subjects but was followed across all classes and for all subjects. A lot of planning and research was done before the theme wasdeclared for the class.Teachers preparedthe theme and the subject wise subthemes well in advance which made the concept even more effective and useful. The teachers also considered the age group of students and planned their work in a manner that created a sense of interest in the students. It was structured so well that it became a ‘Pull’ for the children rather than a ‘Push’.

Every group presented its respective project before the class with a lot of enthusiasm. To evaluate the understanding and knowledge of the concept, open ended questions were asked to the students during their presentation. The activity was a good learning experience for the students as well as for the teachers.

Integerated ProjectBased Learning refocuses education on the student, not the curriculum–a shift mandated by the global world, which rewards intangible assets such as drive, passion, creativity, empathy, and resiliency. These cannot be taught out of a textbook, but must be activated only through experience.
